What you'll find here:

This blog is a collection of vintage advertisements, posted Monday through Friday. All ads are scans from magazines in my collection (or those of my friends), so I claim no copyright over them. Remember, these ads are from bygone eras: don't get upset if you see something you don't like, nor excited if you see something you do.

If you particularly like an ad and want a hi-res copy for yourself, email or message me and I can send you one.

Encyclopedia Britannica

Playboy Jan. 1969
I'm not going to type that all out, because it's about encyclopedias.
But those that care might find this ad for the 200th anniversary edition interesting.

Two-fer Tuesday!

Playboy Jan 1969
Yes, two.  Twosday.

Of particular note in this ad: a drinking game which seems to imply adult fun of the "swinging" type.   I've never seen an ad for a drinking board game... I wonder if Spencer's sells them?

Three-fer Friday!

Playboy Sept. 1966
This trio features an Eddie Bauer hat, a tiny Yashica camera, and a sweater by Plymouth.

Two-fer Thursday

Playboy Sept. 1966
Here's a pair of ads: a punny Ole Tequila ad featuring a confused matador, and an ad for Apache Moccasins with a swinging Apache man.

Also note, the recipe for a Margarita in the tequila ad calls for no sours, and is 40% lemon juice.  And only totals 2.5 oz.  Not the Margarita I'm used to seeing. When did the Margarita evolve into what it is today?

The Saga of Brick Mason

Playboy Sept. 1966
I really recommend that you give this one a read-though.  It's a story of one Brick Mason who eats healthy breakfasts and dances Go-Go.  He dates three girls in a single day (one of whom is named "Yes Yes"), and drops some wisdom regarding the economy.

Why don't they make ads like this anymore?

Bacardi Party!

Playboy Jan. 1969
Probably one of the few times you'll see Pepsi and Coca-Cola in the same ad.

The Killing of Sister George

Playboy Jan. 1969
Not being familiar with this play/film, I took the opportunity to look it up on IMDB.  Turns out, it's one of the first films in the U.S. to earn an X rating.  Something about lesbians and adultery and soap operas.

I also just realized that the picture above is an optical illusion.  Well done, me.

More from 4711

Playboy Jan. 1969
Here's another ad for that classic fragrance from 4711, plus two more!  Check out a previous 4711 ad here.

Career Club Shirts

Playboy Oct. 1968
"Man, every time I wear this shirt, people keep tryin' to get up in my business and plant a smooch!  Girl, I'm trying to walk on a beach! My shoes are wet! Can't you see this isn't the place for this?!"

Smirnoff Vodka

Playboy Oct. 1968
There's just so much 60's in this picture, I don't even know what to do about it.

Tiparillo Cigarettes

Playboy Sept. 1964
Here is a classier, less sexy advertisement for Tiparillo, unlike this one featured before.  I'm actually a little envious of the people in this fancy bar.  I can almost hear the jazz playing.

Champale

Playboy Sept. 1964

Yet another low-quality brew touting itself as Champagne...
And this one even has a tacky name to go with it.
