What you'll find here:

This blog is a collection of vintage advertisements, posted Monday through Friday. All ads are scans from magazines in my collection (or those of my friends), so I claim no copyright over them. Remember, these ads are from bygone eras: don't get upset if you see something you don't like, nor excited if you see something you do.

If you particularly like an ad and want a hi-res copy for yourself, email or message me and I can send you one.

Gordon's Vodka

Playboy Sept. 1964
Every drop of Gordon's Vodka is screened 15 times by an exclusive U.S. patented process, using an agent that is actually cleaner than the air you breathe.  The Gordon's process produces the smoothest, clearest, most mixable vodka you can buy.  Try it soon in your favorite vodka drink.  And you'll be pleased with the price for Gordon's quality.

Falstaff Beer

Playboy Nov. 1967
Check out those old-style pop tabs.

... and how come an empty can still has condensation on the outside?

Esquire Socks

Playboy Nov. 1967
Ad text:  "If they fall down before they wear out, we'll replace them for free."  No other sock has a guarantee like that.  But what other sock comes in 3 different lengths and lots of colors.  You'll fall in love with Ban-Lon Slip-Not 93.   But it won't fall for you.

White Horse Scotch

Playboy Nov. 1967
Most of the ads I see that feature/include/show women do so in a less-than-flattering manner.  Probably due to the target audience of a Playboy magazine, but most of the time women are shown as being subservient and/or objectified creatures best suited to cater to man's pleasures, which of course makes such advertisements good targets for us modern-day readers to scoff and snort derisively at.  So I find this ad refreshing, as it features a jaunty pants-wearing woman who evidently plays and works just like the boys do.
And let us not forget the awesome plaid/turtleneck/orange glasses combo.  Retch.

Music Albums

Playboy Nov. 1967
No, I'm not going to type all that out for you.  But do click the link and take a look at some of these albums for yourself.  Angela Lansbery, Bill Cosby, Johnny Cash, Paul Revere and the Raiders...  There's some good names on there.

Ford Performance Buyer's Digest

Playboy Jan. 1969
I'd personally love to get my hands on some of the illustrations from an old Performance Digest.

Seagram's Gin

Playboy Jan. 1969
Haven't figured out why it's the January issues that got the Christmas advertisements.

Volkswagen Beetle

Playboy Oct. 1968
Volkswagen is one of the only companies that makes self-deprecation cute.  Other ads I've commented on come off as pretentious or confusing.  Here, however, VW simply states that the Beetle is - yet again - the same as it always had been.  It's one of the only cars that's been marketed as ugly as if it were a good thing.

Cutty Sark

Playboy Oct. 1968
Actually a pretty nice-looking ad.  Classy boat painting, at least.

Antique Bourbon

Playboy Oct.  1968

I was initially surprised by this ad; it looks a lot more modern than '68.
I could have believed this was in the 90's.

Belforte Watches

Playboy Nov. 1967
I've never heard of Belforte before, but I found a history of it here if anyone is interested in this American watchmaker.

Plymouth Fury

Playboy Nov. 1967
I found it amusing that this ad for the '68 Fury touts its "massive" stature and that it's the heaviest car out there... things that are considered negatives in today's green world of lightweight materials and fuel efficiency.

Old Spice

Playboy Sept. 1964
A classic never gets old.  I think that after shave is still available.

Van Heusen

Playboy Sept. 1964
This advertisement for shirts paints an interesting picture of home life in the 1960s: These are the days when men are men, they eat roast beef, their wives are blonde forever, and they wear shirts with bold stripes.  No pussyfooting.
