What you'll find here:

This blog is a collection of vintage advertisements, posted Monday through Friday. All ads are scans from magazines in my collection (or those of my friends), so I claim no copyright over them. Remember, these ads are from bygone eras: don't get upset if you see something you don't like, nor excited if you see something you do.

If you particularly like an ad and want a hi-res copy for yourself, email or message me and I can send you one.

Gilbeys's Gin

Playboy Jan. 1969
I'm always leery of budget gin, but I've had their vodka and it wasn't half bad.  Regardless, it's 90 proof, so that's got to be fun times.

Chanel for Men

Playboy Jan. 1969
As opposed to, you know, those partial-males for whom there are already tons of perfume options.

1969 Harley Davidson

Playboy Jan. 1969
I promise, this is not the same ad as this one I ran a couple weeks ago.  But it appears that HD ran a series of similar ads over the years each featuring a different bike.  This one is for the 1969 Sportster.

Gordon's Vodka

Playboy Nov. 1967
Yes, Gordon'sVodka.  Good with either orange or tomato.  I took the liberty of googling that patent number, and it really is a patent for vodka published in 1959.  Here's the link, if anyone cares to read a patent about vodka.

Three-fer Wednesday

Playboy Sept. 1966
What more could you want?  An outback-style hat from Eddie Bauer, a super-slim camera, and a nice alpaca jacket from Plymouth...  Everything you need to look like the perfect tourist.  WOO!

No, I'm not typing out the ad text for three ads.  Try clicking the image, it should zoom.

Yamaha's Swinging World

Playboy Sept. 1966
Yamaha's answer to Honda's scooter offering, the BMOC-60 is a smaller-engined vehicle with even better (200 mpg!) efficiency. I'd like to point out that BMOC apparently really does mean "Big Man On Campus," although I couldn't find a third party source to verify this.  Please note that this scooter, like the Honda one, also bears a man giving a ride to a lady carrying an instrument.

Advice to all scooterists:  if you pick up a girl, be sure you enjoy ukulele or tuba.

Wild Moss and Dry Lime Cologne

Playboy Nov. 67
I'm not sure Wild Moss sounds like such a good idea. Nor Lime, to be honest.  Anyone have experience with a citrus cologne?

Zero King Jacket

PLayboy Sept. 1964
Another of the fashion ads with interesting art instead of a photograph.  Frankly, I kind of like the style.

Ad text:
The man of action has good reason to be irresistably drawn to the pullover jacket.
Zip, he opens the neck. Zip, zip, he opens its sides. Zip, zip, he opens its pockets. Or closes them.
Not a moment's precious time that might be spent in conquering new worlds is lost in dressing when you wear a pullover jacket.
Especially the Turtle Pop by Zero King.

Tiparillo and the Librarian

Playboy Oct. 1968
Some ads I presume must have only run in certain magazines, because this cigarette ad seems to be giving me advice on how to get already-nude women to stop covering themselves with literature.  A situation I doubt many Popular Mecahnics readers find themselves in.

Schlitz

Playboy Jan. 1969
I don't always drink Schlitz, but when I do, it's because I ran out of real beer to drink.  It's hilarious to me that beer/liquor we consider sub-par or bottom-shelf nowadays is advertised as premium-grade product in the 60's and 70's.

Pub for Men

Playboy Jan. 1969

I like a good cologne, but I'm not sure I want to smell like anything related to a pub.

Chanel No.5

Playboy Jan. 1969
Ah, the iconic Chanel No. 5.

Just shows that some things don't change.  This potion has been around for ages.

Lowenbrau, and bad pairing choices.

Playboy Sept. 1964
Now, see, I've had both Lowenbrau and champagne, and they don't taste at all alike.  So, no, try at least getting another light beer.  Champagne will give you a headache if you're following beer.  Pshh.  Amateurs.

At least they aren't emphasizing how expensive Lowenbrau is.

Ronrico Rum

Playboy Sept. 1966
Enjoy this picture of a girl in a sweater drinking out of a coupe.  And not listening to John Philip Sousa.

Point Blank

Playboy Nov. 1967
I've never heard of this movie, but it sounds like a Bond-esque spy thriller.  Anyone out there familiar with it?

Also:  does that tagline mean that every man is his victim, and probably most women?  Why hasn't someone apprehended this sociopath?  Ugh.  Trust the 60's to let things like this just slide.

Johnnie Walker Red

Playboy Nov. 1967
This is a good, straightforward advertisement for selling scotch.  This is a good product, and you should buy it.  None of this "our scotch is exclusive and inaccessible to the common man come back when you grow up" nonsense we get from Grant's.

Tigress perfume

Playboy Oct. 1968
Giver her Tigress - if she's wild enough to wear it.

Impulsive.
Unpredictable.
Uninhibited.
Always different.
Never tame.
Give her tigress - when life gets too civilized.

Campus slacks

Playboy Oct. 1968
I think the first thing is that the girl's dress gets wet?  I guess so it gets clingy, and we can steal middle-schoolish glances at her bosom? Tee-hee!

I'd also point out that these pants are SO GOOD that they even keep his shirt and hair perfectly dry as well.

Harley Davidson

Playboy Oct. 1968

Ad text:  The new Rapido explodes into 1969! Here's a  125cc stick of dynamite that weighs in with the 80's and 90's, but accelerates past the 175's.  This year, Rapido comes in two models - a swinging street version and this hot new scrambler with high pipe, perforated heat shield, large sprocket and special off-the-road tire.  Either way, Rapido will turn out the crowd and turn in the winning performance.  Low end torque, wheelies and effortless top speed - $400 in the street version.  This is the one they'll be talking about all year long.  Get in on the conversation.  Your Harley-Davidson dealer has the cycle, low-cost financing and insurance. Harley-Davidson Motor Co., Milwaukee, Wis.

Tareyton Cigarettes

Playboy Sept. 1964
Ahhhh, Tareyton.  This is one of the many such ads Tareyton ran featuring bruised and battered people (men and women alike, put down your feminism pitchforks) defending their favorite smoke.  I referenced these ads in this ad a while back.  Now, I understand the sentiment that Tareyton is trying to express with these ads, but seriously, when was the last time punches were thrown over which brand cigarette to smoke?
